Attachment (And Why It Feels Like Losing Yourself)

There’s a difference
between loving someone…
and needing them to feel okay.
At first, it can feel the same.
You feel close.
Connected.
Alive in the relationship.
But then something shifts.
They don’t respond the same way.
They pull back.
They’re distracted.
And suddenly…
you feel unsteady.
That’s not just connection.
That’s attachment.
Attachment is when your sense of self
starts depending on how someone else is showing up.
If they’re warm, you feel good.
If they’re distant, you feel anxious.
Your emotional state
rises and falls
based on them.
And that’s exhausting.
For both people.
I think about it like this—
Connection is like trees in a forest.
They stand beside each other.
They support each other.
When the wind comes, they may even help steady one another.
But each tree
still has its own roots.
Attachment is different.
It’s like being grafted into another tree…
where your life source
depends on them.
And no person
was meant to carry that weight.
When we expect someone else
to make us feel worthy…
chosen…
secure…
we end up draining them.
And losing ourselves.
Because now our identity
is tied to their behavior.
And underneath that…
is something deeper.
A quiet question:
Am I enough… on my own?
If that answer feels uncertain…
we start looking for proof outside of us.
In relationships.
In attention.
In validation.
But validation doesn’t last.
It has to be given again…
and again…
and again.
And no matter how much you receive…
it never quite settles.
Because real confidence
doesn’t come from being confirmed by someone else.
It comes from knowing yourself.
From learning how to sit with yourself
without immediately reaching for something
to fill the space.
From choosing, even in small ways,
to build your life from the inside out.
Sometimes that means stepping back.
From constant input.
From relationships.
From anything that keeps you looking outward
for your sense of worth.
Not forever.
Just long enough
to come back to yourself.
Because when you’re rooted in who you are…
connection becomes something beautiful.
Not something you depend on to survive.
You can love fully.
Care deeply.
Be close to someone…
without losing your center.
That’s the difference.
You don’t need someone else
to be your source.
You already have one.
If this feels familiar…
like your emotions have been tied
to someone else’s presence…
just pause.
You don’t have to pull away from love.
You just have to come back to yourself within it.
That’s where everything starts to feel different.
