Imposter (And the Voice That Tells You You’re Not Ready)

There’s a voice that shows up
right before you step into something new.
It sounds like:
Who do you think you are?
You’re not qualified for this.
People are going to see right through you.
And if you listen to it long enough…
you start to believe it.
I remember feeling that way
when I first started thinking about writing.
Not just doubt…
but this quiet fear
that I would be exposed somehow.
Like I didn’t have the right
to say anything at all.
Because I wasn’t perfect.
Because I had made mistakes.
Because I was still figuring things out.
And underneath all of that…
was one belief:
I’m an imposter.
But here’s what I’ve come to understand—
That voice doesn’t show up
because you’re unqualified.
It shows up
because you’re stepping into something that matters.
It meets you
right at the edge of growth.
And if you don’t recognize it for what it is…
it will keep you sitting still
in a life that feels too small.
So I had to get honest with myself.
Not about what I was afraid of…
but about why I wanted to move forward.
And when I got quiet long enough to listen…
the answer wasn’t complicated.
It wasn’t about recognition.
It wasn’t about proving anything.
It was this:
Maybe something I’ve lived through…
could make it a little easier for someone else.
And that was enough.
Because you don’t have to be an expert
to speak from experience.
You don’t have to have it all figured out
to share what you’ve learned.
You don’t have to be perfect
to be meaningful.
You just have to be real.
The truth is—
there will always be people who don’t understand you.
People who question you.
People who think you’re not qualified.
But that doesn’t disqualify you.
It just means
you’re not meant for everyone.
And the people who are meant to hear you…
aren’t looking for perfection.
They’re looking for honesty.
So instead of trying to silence that voice completely…
learn to see it differently.
It’s not proof you should stop.
It’s a sign
you’re doing something that requires courage.
And courage doesn’t feel confident at first.
It feels uncertain.
It feels exposed.
It feels like stepping forward
without knowing how it will turn out.
But you do it anyway.
Not because you’re completely ready…
but because staying where you are
no longer feels right.
You are allowed to grow
while you’re still becoming.
You are allowed to speak
while you’re still learning.
You are allowed to take up space
before you feel fully confident.
You’re not an imposter.
You’re just at the beginning
of something that matters.
If this is where you are…
standing at the edge of something
you feel called to do…
and that voice is getting loud…
just pause.
You don’t need to silence it perfectly.
You just need to keep moving anyway.
That’s how you become
who you’re meant to be.
